About Sis Ganj Gurudwara
Gurdwara Sis Ganj, a Sikh pilgrimage, was built on the land where
the Mughals in 1675 AD. martyred the Sikh Guru Sri Guru Tegh
Bahadur. There are nine historic Gurudwaras, associated with
important events , which had a great bearing on the history of
Punjab and changed it's course and direction. Consequently it became
a renowned place of pilgrimage , being the sacred city, as the five
Gurus visited the capital . Various Gurudwaras have been constructed
to commemorate their visits. Thousands of pilgrims throng these holy
shrines everyday to listen to kirtan ( devotional music ) from
Granth Sahib.
The divine legend
This Gurdwara is associated with the Ninth Guru, Shri Guru Tegh
Bahadur Sahib Ji. It marks the site where Guru Sahib was martyred on
the orders of the Mughal Emperor, Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb had unleashed
a reign of terror and ordered that Hindus be forcibly converted to
Islam. On the request of Kashmiri Pandits, Guru Sahib took up their
cause and told them to tell the Emperor that if he could convince
the Guru to embrace Islam, they would all do so.
Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib embraced martyrdom in Delhi on November
11th, 1675. Bhai Jaita and his associates brought his head to Chakk
Nanaki. The cremation of the head of Guru Sahib was held here on
November 17th, 1675. The trunk of that tree under which the Guru was
martyred and the well where he took his daily bath while in prison
are preserved here to this day.
A century later a devotee named Baba Baghel Singh searched and
found this place and had this place of worship constructed here.
